The Eye of the World – UK 1st HB

The 1st volume in ‘The Wheel of Time’ series. The UK 1st hardcover edition (ISBN:  0-356-19068-4) was published by Orbit (Little Brown) in July 1990. This was preceded by the US version published by Tor in January of the same year. This book was printed in limited numbers with a significant amount of those going to libraries. Some copies of this and later volumes in the series have turned up with the copyright page removed it is likely that this indicates that they are library copies.

The dust jacket has a marked price of £13.95. There has been at least one additional printing of this edition (1999) and for the true 1st edition there should be no mention of reprints on the copyright page.

Prices for the 1st edition can easily reach £300-400, with signed copies significantly more. Due to the scarcity of the 1st edition the later printing is still collectable with prices of around £50.

The Eye of the World – Limited Edition

This, the 1st volume of the series has recently (November 2011) been re-issued in the UK by Orbit as a limited edition hardcover (ISBN: 978-0-356-50152-9). According to the publisher just 2000 copies exist. Issued without dust-jacket this comes with matching black slipcase with Wheel of Time motif to boards and slipcase. Given the limited issue state of this volume there is no reprints of this edition. Sadly this volume lacks the full colour end-piece maps which come with the standard hardbacks. Also surprisingly it doesn’t have the facsimile Robert Jordan signature that the later volumes in the series have.
