A Storm of Swords – George R. R. Martin – Voyager HB slipcased re-issue

The third volume in George R. R. Martin’s classic ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’. This (and the other four volumes currently released) were re-issued in the UK by Voyager as a matching set of hardcovers to commemorate 15 years since the original publication. Two versions of the hardcover were issued: a standard trade hardcover (which has the dust-jacket updated to match the style of recent volumes in the series) as well as a slipcased hardcover edition. The slipcased edition was published in November of 2011 with an ISBN of: 978-0-00-745635-2

The slipcased edition has blue boards (no dust-jacket – as issued), quarter bound in a design with 5 of the House sigils. Gilt titling to spine with the Lannister House motif echoed on the matching slipcase and comes with integrated cloth bookmark. Originally retailing at £40 these were initially provided in publishers shrink wrap.

I’m not sure how many printing were made of this edition – but, if it were consistent with the earlier volumes then there would be 3. In typical Voyager fashion the printing number is provided on the copyright page (with a single ‘1’ indicating the 1st print). As with the previous volumes this is currently out of print (with no indication from the publisher of any plans to reprint) and like all the previous volumes in the series is difficult to find online. Prices have risen substantially in the last 6 months and although prices are not as high as for the previous editions expect to pay £100 for a decent copy. As far as I can tell the printing state doesn’t make a great deal of difference to the expected price – but a copy still shrink-wrapped does command a premium.

Note: Interestingly the availability and prices of the next volume in the series (‘A Feast for Crows’) are holding steady – although at some point I expect this to change and prices to rise based on the behaviour of the previous volumes.

A Clash of Kings – George R. R. Martin – Voyager HB slipcased re-issue

The second volume in George R. The slipcased edition was published in September of 2011 with an ISBN of 978-0007456345.

The slipcased edition has blue boards (no dust-jacket – as issued), quarter bound in a design with 5 of the House sigils. Gilt titling to spine with the Baratheon House motif echoed on the matching slipcase and comes with integrated cloth bookmark. Originally retailing at £40 these were initially provided in publishers shrink wrap.

To my knowledge 3 printings have so far been made of the slipcased edition. In typical Voyager fashion the printing number is provided on the copyright page (with a single ‘1’ indicating the 1st print). This is currently out of print (with no indication from the publisher of any plans to reprint) and is now *extremely* difficult to find online. When you can track down a copy expect to pay in excess of £400 for a decent copy. As far as I can tell the printing state doesn’t make a great deal of difference to the expected price – but a copy still shrink-wrapped does command a premium.

Note: The next volume in the series (‘A Storm of Swords’) is now starting to become difficult to find and prices have started to rise significantly.

A Feast for Crows – George R. R. Martin – Voyager HB slipcased

The fourth volume in George R. R. Martin’s classic ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’. This was first issued in the UK in October 2005 by Voyager as a regular trade hardcover and simultaneously as a special signed, limited edition (of a 1000 copies). The limited edition (ISBN: 000722463x) was originally available only through Amazon for £35. This edition was bound in red cloth with matching slipcase and shipped without the dust-jacket of the trade edition. There is just one printing for the limited edition which is identified by a single ‘1’ on the copyright page.

There was also an additional ‘international’ version of the limited edition which was intended for markets outside of the UK. This was limited to just 300 copies and wasn’t intended to be numbered – however, due to a mistake at the publishers a number of these copies escaped into the wild. When the mistake was realised the publishers froze the remaining stock, and are said to have removed the numbering on these copies. So there is likely to be fewer than 300 *numbered* copies of this edition out there. Copies which are still shrink-wrapped will be identified by an ‘Export Only Edition’ sticker to the front.

This was also re-issued in hardcover last year. In both a trade edition and a special slipcase edition (sadly *not* signed or limited) to match that of previous volumes in the series.

Copies of the UK limited edition still surface fairly regularly and currently fetch prices of £100+ for a good copy – more if the copy is still in the publishers shrink wrap. Due to the reduced print-run of the international edition copies are scarcer and the price reflects this exect prices of £150 and upwards.

A Game of Thrones – George R. R. Martin – Voyager HB slipcased re-issue

The first volume in George R. R. Martin’s classic ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’. This was re-issued in hardcover by Voyager in 2011 to commemorate 15 years since the original publication. Two versions of the hardcover were issued: a standard trade hardcover (which has the dust-jacket updated to match the style of recent volumes in the series) as well as a slipcased hardcover edition.

The slipcased edition has black boards (no dust-jacket – as issued), quarter bound in a design with 5 of the House sigils. Gilt titling to spine with the Stark House motif echoed on the matching slipcase and comes with integrated cloth bookmark. Originally retailing at £40 these were initially provided in publishers shrink wrap.

To my knowledge 3 printings have so far been made of the slipcased edition. In typical Voyager fashion the printing number is provided on the copyright page (with a single ‘1’ indicating the 1st print). This is currently out of print (no doubt due in part to the success of the television series) and is now difficult to find online. When you can track down a copy expect to pay around £80 for a decent copy.

Update 28 July 2012: Due to this now being out of print prices for this (seemingly irrespective of printing) can easily reach in excess of £200.

Note: Following the release of this edition the later volumes in the series were also re-released in a staggered fashion in matching editions.
